Briefs, appeal bonds, motions, lower courts' cases on appeal, exhibits (paper-based), correspondence, opinions of Supreme Court, and other material pertinent to cases on appeal. The court's opinions are printed in the North Carolina Reports, available online at https://digital.ncdcr.gov/digital/custom/court-reports. The case files are arranged in four subseries.
Subseries 1: Original case files dated 1800-1908 in paper format and arranged by assigned file numbers (Box 1-1217). These case files are available online for free through FamilySearch.org.
Subseries 2: Original case files dated 1909-1939 in paper format and arranged by term of court (Box 1-1414). A microfiche index is available for the 1909-1929 cases in the Microfilm Search Room, and the 1930-1939 files are described to the case level in the online catalog. Please consult with the reference staff for more information.
Subseries 3: Imaged case files dated 1940-1981 are being converted to microfilm. Files are described to the case level in the online catalog. As of August 2021, case files through Fall Term 1969 are available on microfilm.
Subseries 4: Case files dated 1982-2008 in microfiche format and arranged in the order corresponding to the published North Carolina Reports.
