Wills are formal statements of a person's wishes regarding disposition of his or her property after death. Such a statement is commonly made in a writing that is signed, sealed, declared, and witnessed.
Wills prior to 1901 are indexed by name of devisor/decedent in the State Archives' online catalog and are easily browsed and searched in our new indexing module. Lists of wills for select counties that go past 1901 are also available on our website.
Wills held by the State Archives of North Carolina may also be available on third party websites like Family Search.
